Earth System Science refers to the interactions (exchanges) between major components of the Earth System (biosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and cryosphere). Researchers studying the Earth System are highly interdisciplinary as they often work on questions relating to exchanges between two or more components of the Earth System; for example the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the biosphere and atmosphere.
